Mastering SAT Math
I provide SAT Prep for the math portion of the SAT. Sessions are available in two formats:
SAT Math Tutoring (one-on-one)- Small Group SAT Math Classes (max 6 students)
In my SAT prep sessions students work extensively with the math portion of the 8 practice tests that are available in the College Board’s The Official SAT Study Guide.
Mastering the material in these practice tests provides a template, and many examples, for what students need to learn in order to score well on the math portion of the SAT.
Reviewing, Connecting, and Puzzle Solving
SAT math prep involves several components.
- It can help students improve their foundational math skills.
- It helps students review and remember math they were taught
- It helps students connect and tie together concepts that they learned in bits and pieces over the course of their high school math career.
- It can strengthen problem solving skills. Many of the problems are like little
mini-puzzles that require bringing together disparate pieces of math knowledge and putting them together in a new and different way. This can improve creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. Problems like this provide the greatest learning opportunity!!
One-on-One Tutorials or Small Group Classes
SAT math prep tutorials are done on Zoom either as one-on-one sessions or as small group classes with 2 – 6 students. The small group classes provide a more cost-effective way to do SAT math review.
Unless you start prepping 6 months or a year in advance, I typically prefer to do slightly longer sessions for the SAT work. This is simply so that we can cover enough material to make a real difference. For 1-3 students I would usually recommend 1 1/2 hour sessions, and for groups of 4-6 students I would usually recommend 1 3/4 or 2 hour sessions. My SAT rates and my math tutoring rates are the same.
This Takes Some Time — it’s a Trail Run, not a Sprint!
SAT Prep is better thought of as a 100 mile trail run, rather than a 50 meter sprint. Even when focusing solely on the math portion of the test, it is a good idea to start prepping well in advance.
This usually requires putting in some time over a period of weeks or months.
Some SAT prep companies recommend a year of SAT prep. This gives the student the opportunity for breaks, and the chance to cycle back to material that needs a second pass.
Improvement can happen — and it takes time and dedication!
